GENEVIEVE BEGLEY

About Genevieve

Leeds College of Music BA(Hons) graduate, Genevieve is an experienced, talented and friendly singer specialising in Jazz. She performs regularly in a wide variety of projects ranging from singer-songwriter original to Jazz and Pop across the UK and in notable venues such as The Belgrave Music Hall, the Jazz Leeds Festival in 2018/19,  the 2012 BBC Proms, Disneyland Paris and Notre Dame Cathedral. She has also fronted Big Bands and released music both as a lead singer and backing vocalist.

Genevieve teaches beginners to advanced students from age 7 upwards. Areas of focus will include:

– warm ups
– pitch and tone 
– rhythm
– expression
– vocal health
– the music you love 

Genevieve teaches almost all genres as she performs, but specialises in Pop and Jazz. However, her musical background includes formal Classical training and Musical Theatre experience.

First lesson
For the first lesson you should bring in a song you want to start with. But don’t worry if you can’t pick! Genevieve will have plenty of sheet music. She will run through a warm-up and assess the areas you want to work on.

About Christella

Christella is a singer, songwriter, composer and musical director. She teaches all ages and abilities and really focuses on developing students in a way they want to learn and in a way that they enjoy.

 

PHYN WILLIAMS

About Phyn

Pronouns: They/Them

Phyn  is a vocal coach, songwriter and independent artist.

Phyn is open to working with students who are interested in Jazz, Soul, R&B and contemporary music.. They focus on finding and developing tone and strength and then applying that with live performance techniques. 

LEROY JOHNSON

About Leroy

Leeds based musician Leroy Johnson has over 30 years experience in the music industry. He has collaborated with some world class artists including Gloria Gaynor, All Saints, Five and many more.  He is a winner of the much acclaimed  Legacy Awards: Arts and Culture 2022 and also a MOBO nominee in the Gospel category.

Leroy is the Founder and Director at IAM Music Academy. 

Leroy teaches a range of genres and is our current director of the Gospel Community Choir. 

 

THANDA GUMEDE

About Thanda

Thanda specialises in a unique blend of vocal techniques, drawing on the rich textures of traditional African singing infused with the precision of Classical training and the versatility of Contemporary styles. His approach is both soulful and technically grounded, giving singers the confidence to explore their full vocal potential.

We’re also delighted to share that Thanda will be joining us as a guest Gospel Choir Director, bringing his vibrant musicality and inspirational leadership to our choir.

CHERIE JOHNSON

About Cherie

Leeds based Cherie found her passion for sining early – performing in Carnival Messiah at the age of nine and leading her church choir by the age of 13. 

Cherie has starred in Hairspray, sung with Loyal Carner and the Kaiser Chiefs, and she won The Gospel Experiment.

As founder of Be.Her, she inspires women through faith, music, and mentorship.

About Matthew

Matthew teaches piano and singing.

He is an accompanist for exams, recitals, choirs and the Heritage Masterworks Chorale.

MIKE RODGERS

About Mike

Mike has been teaching the piano full time for over 15 years and enjoys the variety of teaching all ages and abilities from the very first steps up to professional standard diploma level.

He believes a modern pianist needs to be versatile and open to all styles of music from classical to contemporary.

Lessons cover music theory, improvisation and  accompanying other musicians. Learning can be geared towards exams if desired. 

Mike is  the organist of St Edmunds Parish Church, Roundhay and his hobbies include  building and restoring mechanical musical instruments.

SEAN SMITH

About Sean

Sean is a passionate musician and has been teaching piano, electronic keyboard and music theory at Music House since 2006.

He loves  teaching beginners and advanced students and frequently uses his own compositions of well-known tunes which he believes helps students learn music which is familiar. 

Sean hopes each pupil can achieve their potential whilst developing a deeper understanding and passion for music.

JAY TAYLOR

About Jay

Another of our fantastic piano teachers! Jay is a cross-genre multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer and educator.

Jay studied performance and composition at Leeds Conservatoire. He was awarded the  Conservatoire Award and the Wolfson Foundation Grant and is now a full time professional musician.

ROD TAYLOR

About Rod

Rod has a Degree in Music and has been teaching for over 25 years. He is extremely passionate about teaching the violin to students. His lessons are tailored to individual needs and he welcomes beginners, improvers, youngsters and adults.

 

Rad is experienced at taking pupils through grade exams but he is also happy to teach students for the pure enjoyment of learning an instrument.

Rod also runs the ‘Music House String Ensemble’ which meets on Wednesday evenings – newcomers Grade 4-5 and above are welcome.

Rod really enjoys playing music with groups and ensembles and has performed classical and many other styles of music for royalty, a former prime minister and celebrities. 

RUTH WILDE

About Ruth

Ruth is an experienced guitar, bass guitar and ukulele teacher.  She offers pop, rock, folk and jazz for all ages tuition for and abilities.

Ruth’s  pupils have a 100% pass rate in Rockschool grade exams. As well as working at Music House, Ruth teaches  in primary and secondary schools across Leeds. When she’s not teaching, Ruth likes to write and perform with various bands, including Barcode Zebra, The Durbervilles and Enso Project.

NICK WILLIAMS

About Nick

‘Nick is a qualified music tutor offering 1:1 tuition in violin, viola, music theory, composition and songwriting to all ages and abilities.

He covers all styles from classical to jazz and popular music and he has  extensive experience tutoring students for A- level, BTEC and GCSE music.

Nick is an active performer and composer, playing with Cuban charanga band Charanga del Norte, and directing his own ensemble Spelk. 

DAVID GRAINGER

About David

David has been playing the guitar for over twenty years and teaching for over ten years. He is fascinated by the incredible range of sounds and moods the instrument can evoke, and his own playing focuses on classical guitar, without neglecting the instrument’s role in popular music.

David has helped pupils prepare for grade exams with a 100% pass rate and, more importantly, he  has helped his students to discover and enjoy the music they can make on the guitar.

Morgan  Weale

About Morgan

Morgan  began learning  guitar at the age of 10 and was instantly captivated by the instrument.

This early passion led him to study Music Performance and Production at Leeds Beckett University. Since then, he has performed at a range of venues across Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region, including: The Brudenell, The Wardrobe, Leeds Playhouse, Domino Club, Sela, and many more.

He loves sharing his passion for music and enjoys helping others achieve their musical goals — whether they’re complete beginners or already playing at an intermediate level.

Jego Webb brings a fresh passion for teaching and performance.

A music graduate with hands-on experience in teaching beginner violin and music theory,

Jago’s friendly and encouraging approach helps children build confidence, technique and a love for music.

He is dedicated to creating fun and engaging lessons, and is excited to support every young musician’s journey.

HAZEL SMITH

About Hazel
Hazel enjoys teaching the flute to all ages and abilities.
Children around 7 years old can start on the fife (a small flute) to learn the basic technique and note reading. They can then progress to the flute.
 
Hazel also run our Flute Choir for players around Grade 6+

MATTHEW RICHARDSON

About Matthew

aMatthew has been playing saxophone for 15 years and has been teaching for four years.

Matthew specialises in teaching Jazz music and improvisation skills but is comfortable teaching any style or genre that a student might want to learn, regardless of age or ability.

He studied Jazz Saxophone and Composition at Leeds Conservatoire, graduating with a First Class Honours.

He has also performed in a variety of ensembles and as a a band leader in venues across the country.

EMIL KARLSEN

About Emil

Emil creates a friendly and relaxed learning environment, believing this approach to be key to mastering the drums.

With a student centred and personalised approach, he tailors lessons to each student’s unique goals – whether that’s preparing for graded exams, joining a band, or simply enjoying drumming as a hobby.

His teaching covers various topics, including musicality and stylistic awareness, technique, timekeeping, independence and music reading. 

Jago is a graduate of Leeds Conservatoire (BA/MA), co-owner and teacher at Keighley Drum Centre and other institutions. Aside from tutoring, Emil manages an independent record label and is an active performer with over 20 releases and various appearances for BBC and NRK.

His teaching is based on a wealth of experience as a performer, knowledge he’s excited to share with his students.

CARL ROBINSON

About Carl

Carl Robinson found his passion for music at a young age. After attending Lovell Park Primary School, he quickly developed a love for drumming, and by middle school he was already performing and gaining confidence on stage.

Carl’s early musical experiences were shaped by Reggae. He began playing with a local reggae outfit made up of older musicians, where he was the youngest member of the group. His first taste of national exposure came when he appeared on the television show 3-2-1 with the band Exiles Intact.

Carl later formed Stone Roots, a four-piece reggae band with its own engineer.

During his youth, he had the opportunity to work alongside a number of acclaimed artists, including:

Sanchez, Buju Banton, Tony Rebel, Deborah Glasgow, John Holt, BereseHammond, Cutty Ranks and Buccaneer.
