Earlier this year, we told you about Lead the Change, a five-day creative project that brought young people together to explore important topics through music, songwriting and spoken word.

Led by Paulette Morris and Christella Litras, the project encouraged participants to think about issues that affect their lives and communities, while building confidence, developing creative skills and finding their own voice through music and performance.

Throughout the week, the young people took part in a variety of workshops, writing original songs and spoken-word pieces, sharing ideas and supporting one another in a safe and creative environment. They also enjoyed a special session led by the David Oluwale Memorial Association (DOMA), which explored David Oluwale’s story and his connection to Leeds.

One of the highlights of the week was a visit to Music House’s recording studio, where participants gained an insight into the world of music production and learned more about what happens behind the scenes when an idea becomes a piece of recorded music.

All of their hard work led to a very special performance at the Nice Up Festival on 20 September beneath the stunning Hibiscus Rising sculpture in Aire Park.

Performing in front of a live audience, the young people shared original work inspired by themes including racism, homelessness and mental health. Their confidence, creativity and commitment shone throughout the performance, and it was a real privilege to see their voices and ideas take centre stage.

The festival itself was a vibrant celebration of music, culture and community. Alongside a fantastic programme of live music, visitors enjoyed poetry, food, crafts, market stalls and family-friendly activities, creating a welcoming atmosphere that reflected the diversity and creativity of Leeds.

A very special mention must go to Nekela, who stage managed the performance like a true professional. While the audience saw the young people shining on stage, Nekela was working tirelessly behind the scenes, making sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish.

Her energy, dedication and unwavering support played a huge part in the success of the event. We are incredibly fortunate to have her as part of the Music House team. She consistently goes above and beyond and is a fantastic role model for the young people we work with.

We would also like to thank everyone who supported the project, including our partners, workshop facilitators, performers and, most importantly, the young people themselves. Their passion, honesty and creativity are exactly what Lead the Change is all about.

Much of the project was filmed and documented and we’re currently busy editing footage and photographs from throughout the week and the festival performance.

In the meantime, be sure to visit our Instagram page to see clips and highlights from what was a truly memorable celebration of young voices, creativity, culture and community.
